Bone Cutting
One of my horses cut her leg to the bone:keep it covered or open?

She is registered AQHA and someday I would like to show or sell her to someone that will show her. This is a nice little mare but she already has a few scars and is in no perfect condition. Last Friday she laid down to roll and put her foot through our fence cutting her cannon bone and another spot on her heel bulb of her left hind leg. At that time about 3/4in of bone was visible. But on Tuesday morning when I last changed her dressing the bone was already covered with flesh again. Now - most people have told me to keep a firm wrap on the injuries to keep them clean and keep her from getting bad proud flesh (and that is what I had planned to do). But other people have told me that letting the injury get more air and dry out would be better for her.
I will be changing the dressing this evening - cleaning with betadine, applying a little nitrofurozone, a light non-stick guaze pad, and vetrap. Should I try not wrapping it? Im scared its too wet still and it will get dirty.

It would be worth it to have a vet look at it. It would be a lot cheaper to have this treated then having an infection treated.

It sounds like you are doing the right thing.

Keep it covered to keep germs out.

Knives have many different functions. They can be used in just about every outdoor sport you can think of.  There are also many different sorts of knives and many different maker of these knives.  All have different functions.  From kitchen cutlery to search and rescue, scuba diving and rock climbing, there are  also survival and military knives. Mostly the knives that I will be talking about are pocket knives and hunting knives. There are many different manufactures of these knives. Some of the most popular of them are Buck knives Gerber knives, Benchmade knives, Boker knives, Kershaw knives, Columbia river knife and tool, Cold Steel.

These are the most popular  of the manufactures. These are knives of great quality and can go from reasonably priced, to very high priced, and any where in between. But if you buy a  knives from one of these manufactures it will be of good quality, and you will be more than happy with it. I have used a number of these knives on many different occasion and I have all ways been more then happy with them.

When hunting It is very important to have good knives that holds there edge.  Now some people like to take a pocket knife. For the reason that it folds and can fit in a pocket nicely and will not get in the way. Fixed knives have there advantages to, and many people prefer them when hunting large game. The reason is that it is a more traditional form of knives and they are much sturdier then pocket knives for the obvious reason that there are no moving parts, and this makes them very difficult to brake.

When hunting you also have the option of getting knives with gut hooks. This is just a small hook that is put in to the back side of the blade that makes gutting your most resent kill that much easier. There are those that still prefer to hunt with a plain edge knife, me being one of them. You can also get knives with a serrated edge combo, witch is helpful when cutting though tough parts of a animal like if you have to cut though bone or other tough surfaces what you are sure to need every once and a while, and having the serrated edge can make all the different.

While talking about serrated knives if you are involved in search and rescue it might be a good idea to have a knife that is serrated to cut though strong straps that you might find on back packs, or seat belts, or a rope that someone might be tangled in. Also if involved in search and rescue getting a knife with a rounded tip might be a good idea so that you don't accidentally impale the person that you are trying to help. Also when scuba diving it is good to have a knife with a rounded tip so you don't puncture any of the devices that are keeping you or your diving partner alive.

As you can see there are many uses for knives and there are many different types of knives to uses depending of the circumstances. What I have talked about is just the tip of the iceberg. Another option that you might want to explore is a survival kit with the uncertainty in today's world. It might be a good Idea to hope for the best, and prepare for the worst, and a survival kit is not complete with out a few knives. The most important thing is to remember to always be safe with knives.
