Is it a requirement to know how to swim with no mask on for scuba?
I tried to get PADI certified, but freaked out because I was told I would need to swim without my mask on. I just couldn't do it. I have always swam with nose plugs or holding my nose, but I was told for PADI it is a requirement to be able to not hold your nose and be underwater with the regulator. I thought I could get around it with a pruge valve mask, but the requirement is be without a mask at all. I've asked other people who got there PADI elsewhere and they said that wasn't a requirement for them at all. Which is it?
It is a requirement for PADI certification. You must be able to swim without a mask on as well as remove and replace your mask, and full mask flood and clear. You cannot replace your mask while holding your nose. You have to use both hands and you are going to have to let go to get the mask over your nose.
This is one of the primary skills of any scuba diver. Your mask will come off of your face underwater someday. It may get kicked by your buddy on accident, or a seal could come play with you and knock it off, or any number of other situations. If you can't control yourself when your mask is off and continue breathing steadly, then you are endangering your life and those of your buddies. You will be a paniced diver and could hurt the people who are trying to help you.
I have delt with many students who have had the same problem. It just takes practice in the confined water to overcome your fear. If you have a Divemaster in your class ask him/her to give you some extra help and pointers. If not then see if you Instructor will spend a little time with you after class to help you out. Most dive shops are very accomidating and will help you get certified however they can.
Good Luck with your class. And remember you can learn every skill that is taught.
