the valve is just for letting the moist/warm air out and it wont make a difference to your safety just your comfort.

You'r still playing a game of chance with it, they don't have 100% filtration, but its better than going with nothing, just make sure you have it sealed right.

Paintball can be a very painful experience, especially for those inclined to ignore prescribed rules of safety and common sense. It is also painful for those too old to bend as easily as they once did, but those injuries should fall in the "lacks common sense" category.

It would appear from my research that a great many injuries are minor and can be considered part of the game. The injuries I address here are the more serious and avoidable ones. All injuries are avoidable, but taken too far you lose the spirit of the game. I find it ironic that the most serious injuries are the easiest to avoid.

The most common injury by far are the eye injuries. This says a lot about the intelligence and/or maturity of the paintball enthusiasts. The simple expedient of wearing the face mask immediately takes this injury off the playing field. In supervised play the face mask is mandatory, but not all play is supervised and those participants are obviously not going to be the most responsible. While these injuries are avoidable, it is my opinion that we will always have them. Those wishing to avoid those injuries should simply avoid the unsupervised arenas. I would like to point out that those players wearing Ghillie Suits have an extra measure of protection from eye injuries, especially if their suit has a Hood as any paintball Ghillie should.

The next most common injury is being struck by pellets in the gonads or groin area. This is a serious injury only because most paintballers are young and have their procreation years ahead of them. Some of these genital injuries have indeed left the victims permanently incapacitated. Again, all of these injuries are preventable through the simple expedient of wearing a cup. Think of it as a face mask for the balls. Of course this injury is serious only to the injured party while for some reason I will never understand, the rest of the world finds it hilarious. I don't think this injury comes under any supervision, so you're on your on to protect your valuables. Yet again a certain measure of protection is available by wearing a Ghillie Suit. Quite often paintballers in Ghillie Suits are struck repeatedly and never even feel it.

I mention this last hazard only because of the severity of the injuries. There have been deaths recorded as a result of stray CO2 cartridges. This is absolutely preventable. The canister valve must turn with the canister. Failing to take notice of this one fact can be deadly. In this particular circumstance I cannot imagine A Ghillie Suit providing any benefit.

If you play paintball in a regulated environment, it is extremely rare that an injury will occur that could be considered severe. Hurts, scrapes, lesions, bruises aplenty are an integral part of the sport, just as they are in football, baseball, or any active sport. To avoid it all take up shuffleboard. There are several different types of CPR faceshields.

Microshields have a sheet of plastic type material, and a tube to go in the victim's mouth. These are best for carrying around in a first aid kit/survival kit because they work well and are small.

Faceshields- commonly in a container labeled "pocket mask" are triangularish masks that have an air filled "cushion" as a base, achieving a better seal around the person's mouth. These also usually have an Oxygen input.
Generally, these are carried on ambulances and are found on pool decks, etc (anywhere where oxygen tanks are available).

Both general types are excellent for preventing disease transmission as they have a one way valve.
Microshields are directly on the victim's face, so if your victim was to vomit, you must recognize it immediately so they do not asphyxiate on it. This also may lead to a clogged filter which must be cleaned out before proceeding.
These are NOT reusable.

Face shields have a bubble created around the victims' mouth and nose, with an elevated tube for the rescuer to administer breaths. This tube still has a one way filter so that anything that comes from the victim/rescuer stays with the person it came with.
The bonus to the bubble is that the filter likely won't become clogged when your vicitm vomits. Also, the vomit will have a faster exit from the victim, allowing a better chance that they will not be choking on their own vomit.
Though the tube with one way valve is not reusable, the faceshield itself can be disinfected and reused. The valve/tube is detachable.
Again, because of the oxygen input, if a tank is available you can increase the amount of oxygen your victim gets by a substantial amount (16% oxygen from your exhalation to about 50% or more).

Adult and Child can use either type as the tube insertion (the part that sticks into the victims mouth) on the microshield can be accomodated by their mouth.
Infants have smaller mouths, and a microshield will probably just end up choking them, so a raised faceshield (pocket mask) would be better.

Background Of The Endotracheal Tube

It is a common practice to provide human medical patients with artificial ventilation during surgery or in emergency situations. For example, accident victims will frequently require CPR or intubation by a paramedic in an emergency vehicle or by an anesthesiologist in an operating room. There are other surgical procedures which require use of an endotracheal tube to collapse one lung.

Intubation is accomplished by insertion of an endotracheal tube through the patient's mouth or nasal passages into the airway passage. Such devices have generally comprised a relatively pliable tube with means for connecting it to a respirator or other air supply mechanism for introduction of air into the lungs. An improvement to feeding tubes includes an inflatable/deflatable bag-like structure or balloon "cuff" around the exterior of the tube.

Both single lumen and double lumen endotracheal tubes are known. Typically, a single lumen endotracheal tube is an tracheostomy tube that extends into the trachea of a patient upon intubation and includes one inflatable balloon cuff near its distal end. Commonly, the double lumen endotracheal tube is referred to as an endobronchial tube and, in addition to one lumen which extends to the trachea, has a second longer lumen which extends into the bronchus of a patient upon intubation.

The so-called double lumen endobronchial tubes also offer anesthesiologists the ability to insufflate selectively either the right or left lung or both lungs as required. The so-called double lumen endobronchial tubes also offer the physician the ability to collapse either lung as needed for certain procedures. The size of laryngeal mask airway and endobronchial tubes is limited.

When an endotracheal tube is needed for pediatric use, the size limitations are even more restrictive. In pediatric patients, the size of the trachea is approximately the same size as the patient's pinky finger. In pediatric patients, a single lumen endotracheal tube is advanced into the bronchus until breath sounds on the operative lung disappear. A fiberoptic bronchoscope may be passed along the endotracheal tube to confirm or guide placement of the endotracheal tube.

The larger lumen provided in a single lumen endotracheal tube affords the anesthesiologist access for other instrumentation through the lumen as required. The removal of mucus, the injection of medication, or the insertion of fiberoptic instrumentation for viewing within the endotracheal tube are examples of the additional instrumentation capability which is afforded by a single lumen tube.

For these and other reasons both prior art single and double lumen tubes are not fully satisfactory. There is a need for an endotracheal tube that can be inserted and quickly located in the correct position. There is also a need for an endotracheal tube that can be used to collapse one lung while ventilating the other lung. There is also a need for a single lumen endotracheal tube that can be used in pediatric patients. There is also a need for catheters that can be sealed at their distal ends.

You get your CPR certification as part of your education when you go to school to be a Medical Assistant. When you are finished with school and graduate, then you have to take the national CMA (certified medical assistant) or RMA (registered medical assistant) exam. Then you can go to work for a doctor. After that, the area of the country where you live, the specialty of the doctor you work for and your ability is going to account for how much you get paid, anywhere from $6 per hour to $10 as a starting pay.

Alone With a Heart Attack

You're at home alone, and you suddenly feel a severe pain in the chest.  It is now radiating up all the way to your jaw area, and it's going outwards to your left arm.  Almost certainly you're having a serious heart attack.

You've only got about 10 seconds left.  Your heart is stopping, and you'll be losing consciousness unless you do something right now! 

Start coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough. The cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. And a cough must be repeated about every 1-2 seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.  Cough even to pain!

It's now immediate decision time!  How can you get the fastest medical help or CPR?

    1.  Call 911 while coughing.
    2.  Scream for help IF someone who knows CPR is near enough to hear you.

You MUST get CPR immediately or you may die. 

The deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and the coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.

There's still another benefit of this deep breath/cough routine.  The squeezing pressure on the heart may even help it regain normal rhythm.  In this way, heart attack victims can often get to a hospital and live a lot longer.

One case was reported where the victim was driving about 5 minutes from a hospital, and managed to stay alive while driving this distance by simply using this deep breath/cough routine. 

Five minutes or even longer is a huge improvement on 10-30 seconds of heart stoppage.  You may be able to save your own life.

Take a CPR course and you might be the person nearby that saves another's life.  Saving another persons life!  Now, that's a real ego trip that makes anyone feel good.    
   
CPR is pretty simple to learn, and almost everyone can learn how to do it effectively and safely.

Deadly Combo - Tots and Pools

If you are lucky enough to live in a hot place, with temperatures into the eighties, you may also be lucky enough to own a swimming pool. So you will know that children between age 1 and 2 years old suffer the most pool accidents, often leading to death.

In fact, drowning is the most common cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 4 years, almost makes you want to turn your pool into a giant sand pit, doesn't it? But there are other solutions, and awareness is the first.

Even the Government has become involved in the levels of pool safety that our children should expect from us. After the spa-death of a former Secretary of State's grand-daughter, a new Bill was passed.

The Bill is named for the seven year old grand-daughter of James A. Baker lll and was passed at the end of 2007. The 'Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act' was initiated after she died in a spa when the powerful suction of a drain entrapped her under water.

This is certainly the kind of accident that none of us would think of or anticipate. There is a natural trust that seems inherent in most of us which leads us to think that anything we buy will be 'human-safe'. This sad instance should serve to remind us all that extra safety and vigilance is needed regarding pools, spas, water and children.

One very good rule to have is: if you suddenly find that toddler is 'quiet' or missing, check the pool straightaway - you may only have seconds to revive a drowning child. Even if you know the pool is fenced and the gate is latched, check the pool straightaway.

Even a paddling pool with three inches of water in it can kill a child. So in all this sad and shocking discussion, is there a bright side? Being able to swim is a skill which can give an adult great confidence.

One of the obvious plusses of having your own pool is that your child will grow to feel comfortable in water and be able to learn how to swim. This will help prevent drowning accidents from ever happening and is a big advantage for any adult. The danger time is usually when the child can't swim, statistically between the ages of 1 to 4 years old.

It may not look as glamorous to fence in your pool with a locked gate, but think of the consequences. It could be a selling point if you were selling your home to a young family. We would all like to afford a power pool safety cover, but there are also less expensive ways to insure your family's safety. Instead of the more expensive dome cover, there is also a kid's safety net that can be bought ('katchakid') which hardly detracts from the look of your pool. (This would be suitable for grandparents also who would only need a temporary safety precaution on visiting days.)

Apart from obvious precautions, listed below, it is always an asset to take one of the Red Cross Courses for CPR and First Aid. Other precautions that should be taken can include:

Pool alarms that alert you when someone enters the pool can be set to sound inside the house.
At the end of each day, ensure that toys which may 'tempt' children are not left floating on the water.
Keep a telephone and a reaching pole poolside.
Remove all ladders from the pool each night
Install a self-closing and self locking gate.
Cover the pool each night with your safety device.
Every time your child plays outside he/she should wear a safety vest.
