Hair Shear Problems and Solutions

Having a problem with your hair cutting scissors? Find out what you can do to solve the most common issues that you may encounter with your hair cutting shears.

Cleaning and caring for your hair shears is very important as they are your most important hair tool as a stylist. Without taking the proper care of your hair shears you may run into common problems such as;

• hair shears feeling rough when cutting
• hair pulling and/or catching when cutting
• hair bending or pinching when cutting
• hair sliding towards the tip of your blade and not cutting

The hair cutting scissor problems listed above can likely be solved with a good and thorough cleaning of your hair shears. Small pieces of hair and other debris can easily get caught around the screw and clog the pivot joint on your hair scissors.

To clean your hair shears use a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol. Alcohol is preferred over barbacide as barbacide can ruin your shears, robbing them of lubricant. Using the soft cloth, wipe the blades of your hair shears carefully, away from the cutting edge as well as be sure to wipe the ‘ride' area, where your shears meet at the pivot because hair can get trapped here. Make sure your shears are completely dry before using them again.

If you find that after cleaning your hair shears that they still are not working as they should you can check the tension on your hair shears by doing the following;

• Hold your scissors in a horizontal position with the blades half way open.
• Remove your finger from the lowest grip and the scissor blade should fall open all the way.
• When you hold your scissors in a horizontal position and have them open less than half of the way, the blades should stay in that same position when you remove your finger from the lowest grip.

Carefully adjust the tension of your hair shears with a tension adjuster or by turning the tension adjustment knob on your shears. Make sure to be very gentle because if you are to damage the pivot screw you will need a new pair of hair cutting scissors.

After cleaning and adjusting your hair shears should you find that they are still not cutting properly it may be that you need to have your shears sharpened. Always take your shears to a specialist for sharpening.

If after following the steps above the blades on your shears still feel rough and do not cut the hair properly they are most likely damaged and you will need to replace them.
